Originally from Florida, Lucinda has been a fine artist in the U.S. Virgin Islands for almost 20 years. Presently, she is the resident artist for the Ritz-Carlton in St. Thomas. As the resident artist, Lucinda is able to capture the essence of the property’s atmosphere in her paintings. She also teaches watercolor painting classes at The Ritz-Carlton a few days a week. Lucinda is also an alchemist in her own right. Her unique style distills the deepest qualities of Island Life. It translates into a positive feeling that emanates from the paper or canvas. Lucinda moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1987 and it was then that she gave full attention to watercolor, her trademark to this day. She is able to focus on the light of the islands by using pastel colors against dark shadows and painting the intense light that reflects on the water. Clients have commented that they will sit in front of their painting to be transported into a relaxing state after a hard day at work. “That is the type of feeling I like to bring about, memories of a happier time or perhaps something to look forward to in the future,” Lucinda says. Her subject matter has ranged from Caribbean architecture to still life to abstract. Looking for different ways to express herself through art, she has branched into other mediums such as oil, acrylic and monotype. The artist is inspired by early mornings and late afternoons. This is when island life becomes rich in texture and bold in color. Lucinda’s brushstrokes now capture these times with the thick mediums of acrylics and oils. For the past ten years, she has been guided by masters such as Milton Avery, Vincent Van Gogh, and Henri Matisse. Of course their expert tutelage came with the careful study of books and tenacious viewing of exhibits. In the winter of 1998, Lucinda flew to Washington to see the Van Gogh exhibit. Despite the challenge of standing in line for over an hour with a cast on her foot, it was worth it, because Lucinda found the collection very moving. Later, over dinner with Alan Greenspan, (he had the salmon, she had the lamb) they did not speak about the show. He was, after all, two tables away. Lucinda’s many accomplishments include being the resident artist at Caneel Bay on St. John for eight years and, in 2000, becoming the first artist-in-residence for Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley, CA. Her works have been featured in several magazines such as Islands Magazine, Caribbean Travel & Life, and on the television show Law & Order. Since 1991, she has produced a full line of art cards and limited edition reproductions from her original works.” Lucinda also believes in giving back to the community. She supports the United Way, the Humane Society, Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute and several women’s organizations by contributing major works to their annual benefit auctions. Even during her visits to Napa Valley she volunteered as a guide at the Di Rosa Preserve, an incredible foundation dedicated to San Francisco Bay area artists and their artwork.
